Relationship calculator
Work out what anyone in your family is to you: a cousin’s child, a grandparent’s sister, your mother’s brother’s son. Follow the route from you, or pick from the cousin chart. You get the name in English, the Hindi word where there is one, and a diagram.
Who is it to you?
Start from you and follow the family, one step at a time: mother, then her brother, then his son.

How the calculator works
Every family relationship is a route: up to a parent, across to a brother or sister, down to a child. Your mother’s brother’s son is mother, then brother, then son. The calculator builds that route as a small made-up family and asks the same tree engine that Bargad uses to name the person at the end of it, so the answer matches what a real tree would show.
Each step is a person with a gender, so the answer can be “aunt” rather than “uncle/aunt”, and Hindi can say which side of the family it comes from. Where Hindi has a different word for older and younger (father’s brother is tau if older, chacha if younger), pick “elder” or “younger” under More relatives, or you will see both.
What “removed” means
Cousins are people who share an ancestor but are not brothers or sisters. “Removed” counts the generations between them. Your first cousin’s child is your first cousin once removed: one generation below you. Your parent’s first cousin is also your first cousin once removed: one generation above you. Two generations apart is “twice removed”, and so on. The “removed” never changes the degree: your cousin’s grandchild is still a first cousin, just twice removed.
First cousin, second cousin, third cousin
The degree says how far back the shared ancestor is. First cousins share grandparents. Second cousins share great-grandparents. Third cousins share great-great-grandparents. To find a cousin’s degree, count the generations from the shared ancestor down to the younger of the two of you; take away one. The difference between the two counts is how many times removed.
Cousin chart
Find the ancestor you share. The row is how many generations you are below that ancestor, the column is how many generations they are. The cell is what they are to you.
| You are the ancestor’s… | They are the child | They are the grandchild | They are the great-grandchild | They are the 2× great-grandchild | They are the 3× great-grandchild |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Child | Sibling | Niece / nephew | Great-niece / nephew | 2× great-niece / nephew | 3× great-niece / nephew |
| Grandchild | Aunt / uncle | First cousin | First cousin once removed | First cousin twice removed | First cousin 3 times removed |
| Great-grandchild | Great-aunt / uncle | First cousin once removed | Second cousin | Second cousin once removed | Second cousin twice removed |
| 2× great-grandchild | 2× great-aunt / uncle | First cousin twice removed | Second cousin once removed | Third cousin | Third cousin once removed |
| 3× great-grandchild | 3× great-aunt / uncle | First cousin 3 times removed | Second cousin twice removed | Third cousin once removed | Fourth cousin |
Read it from either side: if you are the ancestor’s grandchild and they are the great-grandchild, they are your first cousin once removed; you are theirs too.
Hindi relation names
Hindi is more exact than English about the route: your mother’s brother’s son is a mamera bhai, your father’s sister’s daughter a phupheri behen, and the two sides have separate words for aunts and uncles. The calculator shows the Hindi word where there is a plain one and says so when there is not. The full list is on Hindi relationship names.
Questions
What is my cousin’s child to me?
Your first cousin once removed. “First cousin” because your cousin shares your grandparents; “once removed” because their child is one generation further down than you are.
What does “removed” mean in a cousin relationship?
The number of generations between the two cousins. First cousins are in the same generation. A first cousin once removed is one generation apart (your cousin’s child, or your parent’s cousin); twice removed is two generations apart (your cousin’s grandchild, or your grandparent’s cousin).
What is the difference between a first cousin and a second cousin?
First cousins share grandparents. Second cousins share great-grandparents, so their parents are first cousins. Third cousins share great-great-grandparents, and so on.
What is my mother’s brother’s son called in Hindi?
Your mamera bhai (a cousin brother through your mama). His sister is your mameri behen. English calls both simply a first cousin.
What do I call my father’s brother and my mother’s brother in Hindi?
Your father’s elder brother is tau and his younger brother is chacha. Your mother’s brother is mama, older or younger. Their wives are tai, chachi and mami.
Is my grandfather’s sister my great-aunt?
Yes. A great-aunt (or grand-aunt) is the sister of one of your grandparents; a great-uncle is a grandparent’s brother. Their children are your parent’s first cousins.
Does the calculator work for step-families and half-siblings?
Yes. Add a half-brother or half-sister, or another husband or wife, and it names the step-relations (stepmother, half-brother) and draws them correctly.
Is the relationship calculator free? Do I need an account?
It is free and needs no account or sign-in. Nothing you pick is saved or sent anywhere. If you want it done for your whole family, Bargad draws every relation on a real tree.
