Bargad holds something personal: your family. This page says, in plain words, what we keep, who can see it, and what we never do with it.
Our promises
- Your family’s details are never sold or shared, apart from the services that run the app (listed below).
- They are never used to train AI.
- You can delete them yourself, at any time.
What we keep
- Your account: your name and email address, from signing in (for example with Google).
- Your family tree: the people, dates, places, relationships, photos and notes you and your relatives add, and a history of changes so they can be undone.
- Your settings: such as the language for relationship names and which emails you get (under Your settings in the tree menu), and a record of each time you turned an email on or off.
- Error reports: when something breaks, the error message, the page and the type of browser, so we can fix it.
We count how Bargad is used (pages opened, invites sent, how fast pages load) in our own database, without names, contacts or anything you write, and keep the detailed counts for 90 days, then only daily totals. With each count goes the kind of device, browser and system you use, the name of the site that sent you here, if any (just its name, like Google or WhatsApp, never the full address), the campaign named in the link you came by, and the first page you opened. Tree pages are counted without saying which tree. If you delete a tree or your account, we count that too, with the reason if you choose one. To count visits, your browser keeps a random id (a code that isn’t linked to your name, and that you can clear any time by clearing site data), and a cookie holding your country, taken from where the page was served, which expires after a week. No advertising or third-party trackers. A tree you start before signing in stays in your own browser until you save it.
When you send us a message (“Tell us what’s missing”), we keep it for a year. Your name and email go with it only if you leave “You can reply to me” ticked.
Who can see your tree
- Only the people the tree’s owner invites. Each person can do more or less: the owner; editors, who can change anything; family, who add their own side and suggest the rest; and people who can only look.
- Owners choose how much of living relatives people who can only look get to see.
- A family link (the one you share in a family group) shows living relatives with their birth year only, and never shows photos of documents, gotra, native place or father’s name.
- Trees are never public and are not listed in search engines.
Emails
- Bargad emails you when family needs you (someone asks to join or suggests a change), when something you asked for is answered, about birthdays and anniversaries coming up that week, with a tip or two in your first week, and now and then about what’s new.
- All of these are on when you make an account, and each one can be turned off on its own: in Your settings, from the link at the bottom of every email, or with your inbox’s Unsubscribe button. They are all in one place, and a change takes effect at once.
- Emails about your account itself (the welcome, being removed from a tree, a tree you were in being deleted) always come, and never advertise anything.
- We count whether each email was delivered, and when you tap a button in one (its link says which kind of email it came from). We don’t track whether you opened it.
The services that run Bargad
- Clerk handles signing in.
- Convex stores the trees, in a data centre in the European Union.
- Vercel serves the website.
- Resend sends our emails; it receives your email address and what the email says.
- Photon (by komoot, using OpenStreetMap) suggests place names while you type one; it receives only what you type in that box.
They process data only to run Bargad.
Deleting
- A tree’s owner can delete the whole tree at any time, from the tree’s Members and settings page.
- You can delete your account yourself, from Your settings (in any tree’s menu) or at the foot of Your trees. It deletes your account, your email settings and their record, and the trees you own, for everyone in them; you can download each of those first. In trees you’re in but don’t own, your card stays as part of that family, without your account.
- To change or remove your details in a tree someone else owns, ask its owner: they can edit or delete any card. For anything else, write to hello@mybargad.com.
